The world's first nuclear explosion occurred on July 16, 1945. The test was located in an area known as the Jornada del Muerto (Journey of Death) in southern New Mexico. At 5:29:45 am mountain war time, a light described as "brighter than a thousand suns" filled the valley. The device, known as The Gadget was a test of implosion design for an atomic bomb.
