Argonne National Laboratory

Argonne is a direct descendant of the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory. It was created in 1946. It is located about 25 miles southwest of Chicago. Argonne was given the mission of developing nuclear reactors for peaceful purposes. It has never been a weapons laboratory.
